Emblem Society of Sword and Chrysanthemum

Description

This is the emblem of The Society of the Sword and the Chrysanthemum, Japan's monster-hunting organization.

It's origins are lost in antiquity and described only in legend. What little is known for sure is that it has been around at least since the Nara Period in the 8th century CE, and was probably one of the founding influences on the samurai and Bushido. However, it wasn't officially recognized until the shogunate of Tokugawa Ieyasu, at which time it was absorbed into the Imperial bureaucracy while remaining independent.

This may be the only monster hunting organization run by a paranormal creature, a nine-tailed Kitsune named Mariko who was also an onna-bugeisha specializing in the naginata. She saved the life of Tokugawa and was named hatamoto.

The emblem's symbolism consists of the rising sun, indicating the society's consecration to the great Shinto goddess Amaterasu-omikami; the chrysanthemum, indicating its dedication to life and beauty and loyalty to the Chrysanthemum Throne; and the naginata, indicating its to fight and die in the service of the Emperor to defend Japan from monsters.
